A first–then board shows a less-preferred task first and a motivating activity next, so a child can see what happens once the task is done.
How to use it
- 1Put the task in the First box, like Shoes on.
- 2Put something your child looks forward to in the Then box, like Trampoline.
- 3Use photos or symbols your child already knows.
- 4Print it and attach the cards with Velcro, or open it on a tablet.
- 5Point to First and help with the task, then point to Then and follow through right away.
Questions
What is a first–then board?
It's a board with two boxes: First shows a task, Then shows what comes after it, usually something your child enjoys. It makes the order of events visible and predictable.
When should I use a first–then board?
Use it when a task stands between your child and something they want, like getting shoes on before the park, or when you want to show what happens after an activity ends.
What should go in the Then box?
Something your child genuinely wants and that you can give right after the task. Real photos of their favorite things often work best. Keep the promise every time so the board stays trustworthy.
Is a first–then board the same as a now–next board?
They're very close. "Now and next" is the common name in the UK; it often shows two steps of a routine rather than a task and a reward.
Can I add a third step?
Yes. Switch to First–Then–Then to show a short sequence, like Toilet, then Wash hands, then Snack.
