Following directions1 / 7

Grown-ups give me directions.

Directions tell me what to do next.

The story

  1. Page 1

    Grown-ups give me directions.

Directions tell me what to do next.

  2. Page 2

When someone gives me a direction, I stop and listen.

I can look at them if that feels okay.

  3. Page 3

Then I do what the direction says.

Like sitting down, or putting my shoes on.

  4. Page 4

If I don't understand, I can ask for help.

I can say, “Can you show me?”

  5. Page 5

Sometimes the direction is something I don't want to do.

I can do it first, and then do something I like.

  6. Page 6

Following directions helps the day go smoothly.

    Everyone knows what is happening.

  7. Page 7

I am learning to listen and follow directions.

I can feel proud of trying.

When to use this story

Read it at calm times, especially at the start of the school year or when routines change. It pairs well with a first–then board for the directions that are hardest.

Tips

  1. 1Give one direction at a time, with a picture if possible, and wait a few seconds before repeating.
  2. 2Say what to do rather than what not to do: “Walk, please” instead of “Don't run.”
  3. 3Use a first–then board when a direction stands between your child and something they want.
