The fire alarm is very loud.

I can cover my ears or wear my headphones.

When I hear the alarm, I stop what I am doing.

I leave my things where they are.

I line up with my class.

My teacher shows us where to go.

  5. Page 5

    We walk outside together.

We walk calmly, one after another.

  6. Page 6

We wait outside while my teacher counts everyone.

It might take a little while.

When the drill is over, we go back inside.

Then I can finish what I was doing.

    I did the fire drill!

When to use this story

Read it at the start of the school year and again before a planned drill if the school shares the date. Many schools will tell families ahead of time if you ask.

Tips

  1. 1Ask the school whether your child can keep headphones or ear defenders nearby for drills.
  2. 2Play a short recording of an alarm at a low volume at home, if your child finds that helpful.
  3. 3Add a photo of the real meeting point outside the school on page 6.
