A potty visual schedule shows each step of using the toilet in order, from pulling pants down to drying hands, so a child can follow along one picture at a time.

How to use it

  1. 1Use the words your family uses: potty or toilet, wee or pee.
  2. 2Remove steps your child doesn't need yet, like flushing, and add them back later.
  3. 3Swap pictures for photos of your own bathroom if that's easier to recognize.
  4. 4Print it and stick it at your child's eye level, next to the toilet.
  5. 5Point to each step as your child does it, and keep your voice calm and quiet.

Questions

Where should I put a potty visual schedule?

Next to the toilet, at your child's eye level, where they can see it while sitting. Some families also put a second copy by the sink for the hand-washing steps.

Should the schedule say potty or toilet?

Use whatever word your child hears every day, and use the same word at home and at school or daycare. You can change every label in the maker.

How many steps should it have?

As many as your child needs right now. Some children need every small step; others only need the main ones. You can split or remove steps anytime.

When should we start potty training?

There's no single right age, and autistic children often learn on their own timeline. Signs like staying dry for longer or noticing a wet diaper can help you decide; your child's doctor can talk it through with you.
