The story

  1. Page 1

    Sometimes I have big feelings.

I might feel angry, scared or worried.

  2. Page 2

Big feelings can make my body feel hot or wobbly.

    My heart might beat fast.

  3. Page 3

    All feelings are okay.

    Big feelings come and go.

  4. Page 4

    I can tell a grown-up how I feel.

I can use words, or point to a picture.

  5. Page 5

I can take slow, deep breaths.

In through my nose, out through my mouth.

  6. Page 6

I can go to my calm corner.

It is a quiet place to rest.

  7. Page 7

I can squeeze something soft or listen to quiet music.

These help my body slow down.

  8. Page 8

Soon the big feeling gets smaller.

    Then I feel calm again.

When to use this story

Read it often at calm times so the steps are familiar before they're needed. During a big feeling, keep words short and point to one picture instead of reading the whole story.

Tips

  1. 1Set up the calm corner together, with things your child chooses, and add a photo of it on page 6.
  2. 2Practice slow breathing when everyone is calm, for example blowing bubbles or a pretend candle.
  3. 3Keep a feelings chart nearby so pointing is always an option.
